Kentucky's Bicentennial Celebration of Abraham Lincoln

KALBC Community Toolkit Resources

The following resources are available for statewide Lincoln Bicentennial programming.  Resources are limited, so book them while they last!

Lincoln-Related Speakers and Performances

As communities plan Lincoln programming for February 2009, there are many excellent speakers available who can visit your institution for a morning, afternoon, or evening program.  The Kentucky Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission has a Lincoln speakers’ bureau (available speakers listed below) and the Kentucky Humanities Council has Lincoln-related speakers and Chautauqua performers who present first-person dramatic performances of historical characters.

View this full list of speakers and performers.

Chautauqua Performers

Historically accurate first-person presentations of figures from Kentucky’s past are available through the Kentucky Humanities Council.  Lincoln-related performers include portrayals of Abraham Lincoln, Henry Clay, Margaret Garner, Mary Owens, Emilie Todd Helm, and more.  Additional speakers and the Chautauqua performers can be found on the Kentucky Humanities Council’s Web site.

Kentucky Historical Society Museum Theatre Program

The Kentucky Historical Society Museum Theatre program offers several short plays relating to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial.  These plays, originally designed to be presented in the museum galleries of the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, are performed by professional actors dressed in historically-accurate costuming.  Each production presents historically-accurate content in an engaging and entertaining format.  The Kentucky Historical Society offers these productions to museums and libraries for special events or programming related to the productions.

A maximum of four productions can be performed in any given day.  Locations are encouraged to promote the productions to local schools or organizations by inviting these groups to see the production.  Availability is limited so preference will be given to locations or events that relate closely to the content of the play.  For more information or to book a performance, please contact Greg Hardison at (502)  564-1792 ext.4454.

Lincoln Museums-to-Go

The Kentucky Historical Society is now offering its new Lincoln Museums-To-Go to communities across the commonwealth.

This traveling exhibit, "Discovering Kentucky's Abraham Lincoln," helps explain Lincoln’s connections to his native state.

Each set includes five free-standing panels with each panel dedicated to a different theme: "A Frontier Childhood," "Becoming President," "Ending Slavery," "Lincoln and Kentucky at War!" and "Remembering Lincoln Differently."

The Museums-to-Go program, a free service provided by the Kentucky Historical Society, offers traveling panel exhibits that explore subjects across the humanities through historical images and lively text.  Institutions and organizations serving adult audiences may borrow the exhibits for one to two month showings in publicly accessible places. These small-scale exhibits are manageable and can easily be adapted to a wide variety of locations.

For more information about the Museums-to-Go program or to reserve a Lincoln Museums-to-Go, email Warren Greer or call him at (502) 564-1792, ext. 4478.

Lincoln: "I, too, am a Kentuckian."

Kentucky Educational Television (KET) worked in conjunction with the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission to produce Lincoln:  I, Too, Am a Kentuckian, an extensive documentary that discusses the sixteenth president’s bluegrass connections.  With intriguing interviews from our nation’s top Lincoln scholars and beautiful footage of Lincoln-related sites from across the country shot in high-definition, I, Too, Am a Kentuckian stands as a high-quality resource for information about Lincoln and Kentucky.

Consider hosting a public showing of the documentary in your community during the week of Lincoln’s birthday.  Email Warren Greer at (502) 564-1792, ext. 4453 for more information.
