Lincoln Pick Up Logs

In this quiz game two teams compete to be the first to build a pool-noodle log cabin by correctly answering questions about Lincoln’s life and lore.

Supplies for the cabin parts
• 8 pool noodles (4 each of 2 colors)
• 4 pieces of ½-inch rigid foam, 9 x 12 inches
• 2 pieces of 2-inch rigid foam,  12 inches square
• 2 sheets of 9 x 12-inch fun foam in a contrasting color
• 4 pieces of felt (2 each of the colors of the noodles)
• Spray adhesive

Equipment for making the cabin parts
1. Coping saw with small teeth (or power saw)
2. Scissors
3. Yardstick

Directions for making the cabin parts
1. Use the saw to cut each noodle into four 13-inch pieces.
2. Cut 3 ¼- inch notches on both sides of each “log,” ½ inch from each end of the log.
3. Cut the 2-inch foam squares in half to make 4 triangles.
4. Glue the ½-inch foam to the triangles to create 2 roofs.
5. Glue the fun foam to the rectangular surfaces of the roof.
6. Cut triangles of felt to match the noodles and glue to the “gable ends” of the roof.

Directions for playing the game
1. Divide the group into two teams.
2. Using Pick Up Logs questions, alternate asking questions of each team and award a log for correct answers.
3. To speed up the game, give each team a 4-log foundation at the start of the game, award logs to the opposing team when an answer is incorrect, or award two logs for difficult questions.
4. Play until one team has built a cabin with 12 logs and a roof.

Variations
• Use Lincoln Logs instead of the pool-noodle logs.
• Customize the questions to relate to Lincoln books in your collection.
